Don't know if you've been asked this before but I feel really stupid not knowing how to do this...how do I add text to a post? Like at the bottom of a picture? You know when you see someone's url and then a long line going down to their text? Please explain:( Um… I’m not sure but I think you’re talking about the blockquote function? Basically if you’re reblogging someone else’s post and there’s a text attached to it, their url and that “line” will automatically appear with what they wrote to “quote” them, thus letting your own followers know who’s the author of that text/comment/addition/etc. So if you’re reblogging a post from someone, and decide to add a comment to it, your url and that “long line” should appear automatically if someone else reblogs it from you so that others who don’t follow your blog will know you were the one who wrote that part. On the other hand if you’re creating a new post, then you can use the blockquote icon; it’s that blue ” icon in the middle if you’re using firefox (6th from the left) or the icon with a vertical line and arrow if you’re in chrome (2nd from the right, NOT THE CIRCLED ONE)
I hope that answered your question! Lemme know if whether that helped or if I misunderstood your question, yeah? :) |
canering: Tumblr Tips ↘
last updated: 27 June 2012 (indicated with *)
Here are some useful extensions, scripts, and tutorials for Tumblr. Scripts require a simple, one click install for Google Chrome. Firefox users may need to download Greasemonkey first before installing scripts.
As far as I know, these scripts/extensions can work together.
I’ll add more links as I think of them, and feel free to share your own tips or resources. Please note that I didn’t make any of these resources, nor do I personally use all of them, so while I’m happy to answer simple questions, it’s probably best to ask the actual creator of the extension/tutorial/tool/etc.
Popular:
- Missing E - Probably the most popular Tumblr extension. Features: one click reblog/queue/drafts, automatically clears all tags when reblogging, adds tags to ask/reply, allows one click reply to comments (hold down the shift key to reply to multiple comments), shuffle queue, adds timestamp to posts on your dashboard, replaces text (reblog, notes) with picture icons, and more. Downside: Tumblr apparently hates Missing E, and will try to scare you into disabling it.
- Xkit - Similar to Missing E. Some additional features: Unfollower check (how to install), shorten long posts on dashboard, highlight or blacklist key terms in posts, download mp3 from audio posts.
- Tumblr Savior - Blacklist tags that you do not want to see on your dashboard. Downside: Not everyone tags.
Some selections from a larger collection of scripts:
- Tumblr Life - Quick links to sort your dashboard by content (photos, text, quotes, video, etc), adds keyboard shortcuts.
- Tumblr Hate - Do you keep seeing the same post reblogged in your dashboard? This script lets you “hate” that post so you won’t see it again.
- Tumblr Helper - Create post templates with common settings, add personal notes to users on your dashboard
- Tumtaster - download mp3s from tumblr
- Notification eraser - If you have one post that keeps getting a ton of notes and clogging your dash, you can block the notifications.
- Tumblr Stats - hover over an avatar to see a user’s stats
- Block posts by source
- Don’t Ask - stop ask posts on your dashboard
- Make avatars bigger on your dashboard
- Unfollower Hater
- Edit tags from your dash
- Hide Tumblr Radar
Within Tumblr:
- Tumblr Settings - Change URL, ask and submit options, enable replies, time zone settings.
- Tumblr Preferences - Dashboard preferences, email address and password reset.
- Tumblr bookmarklet
- Tumblr Mega-Editor - mass edit your posts (Missing E will provide the additional options to edit posts by type)
- http://www.tumblr.com/show/photos (replace photos with other types of posts to filter your dash)
- How to reblog by post type (reblog a post as text, link, etc)
- Use “read more” in text posts
- View posts by date on a tumblr - http://username.tumblr.com/day/YEAR/MONTH/DAY [ie: 2011/12/31]

Did you do the read more/cut tutorial? If so, do you know if there are other tutorials, such as how to make an ask rebloggable, or how to put a quote of a reply to a post as a post? I have seen others do this. Yep, I did. You can use a browser extension like missing e (it’s not unsafe, unlike what tumblr’s trying to make us believe) or greasemonkey (I’ve never used it myself though) but I think with missing e the reblog icon will only show at the actual link/post in the blog itself, and not on your dashboard. Otherwise I’ve stumbled upon this tutorial - it’s a bit complicated though. The simplest way yet without any extension would probably be that you simply screencap the ask you want and make a post with it. As for your second question… I’m slightly confused by it? Do you mean something like this? Or do you mean you taking the actual blogger’s “reply/answer” from an ask out to make a new post from it? In that case you can really only (and simply!) copy it and paste it in a new post. |

how did you make your "about me" page? I tried looking it up on google, but it didn't work ;/ Go to your preferences and then customize your blog. Then click pages in the bar at the top and finally add a page. Answering this publicly just in case anyone else if wondering too. :) |
How to do a text cut/”read more” on tumblr
Create a regular text post. You can even go into an already existing one and edit it.

Then type/put in whatever you wanted to post here. Ok? OK! (Ignore the repeated words in my screencap. FML.)

Once you’re done, choose what you want to hide under a cut. Click right before the first letter of that part to have the “blinking text cursor” placed there.

Then click on the 2nd button from the right, next to the “html” button.

[EDIT] THE ICON’S BEEN CHANGED
[/EDIT]
A dotted line and “READ MORE” will appear right above the line where your text cursor was.

Everything of this post after the “read more” line will be put under a cut. On their dashboard, your followers will only to have to click on the link of your post to go to your entire entry. Visitors who go directly on tumblr will also need to do the same thing but the advantage of this is that it won’t clutter your tumblr or your followers’ dashboards.
Click “create post” (or “save changes” if you’re editing an existing post). This is what it’ll look like on the dashboard once you’re done:

[EDIT] If for some reason you’re missing the “read more” option/button
- you most likely have the wrong box checked in your preferences:
Click on “account” at the top of your dash and go to “preferences” then check what you have at “edit posts using”. The option chosen should be “rich text editor”. Don’t forget to save preferences once done.
That should fix it. [/EDIT]
And guess what?! YOU’RE DONE!

Feel free to reblog with proper credits…
Take out/erase any texts, tags/watermarks and/or credits and YOU. SHALL. DIE.
